List of Charaboms in Bomberman MAX
Charaboms first appeared in Bomberman MAX. Charaboms are collectible partners. In this article, a full list of Charaboms is provided. Additionally, basic information on Charaboms will be given.
Food
When a Charabom is equipped in the Normal Game, any Food (エサ esa, food)? In particular, animal or pet food that is collected will increase that Charabom's statistics. Each Charabom has initial stats when it is collected, as well as a maximum value for each stat. The Food item panels, the stats they affect, and the effect of each stat are as follows:[1][2]
Panel | Effect |
---|---|
Attack power + 1 (physical attack) | |
Defense power + 1 (mitigate incoming attack) | |
Special power + 1 (elemental attack) |
Battle Game
In the Battle Game, two players may compete, each selecting one of their Charaboms to battle the other. A Charabom with higher stats has more of an advantage. Additionally, when a special attack is used, elemental relationships come into play. The element of the attacking Charabom is compared to that of the opponent, which determines how much damage is dealt. These relationships may be seen in the diagram to the right.[1]
Element Groups
There are four element groups. Each group has its own classification,? 系 kei, taxonomical group explicitly applicable to Charaboms that are acquired from cages. The four elements are:[2]
Icon | Element | (JP) | Group | (JP) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Acquiring Charaboms
There are five ways to acquire Charaboms in the game:
- In certain areas, a cage will appear. The clear condition is to hit the cage with a bomb, releasing the Charabom, and then touch the Charabom to obtain it.[1]
- Certain Charaboms may be combined with one another to form a new Charabom. A second player must be involved in order to initiate the procedure. Both players will receive the new Charabom.[1]
- The opponent's Charabom can be won as a prize in the Battle Game.[1]
- Two Charaboms, Shardra and Ox Battra, may only be obtained through the By Chance Game, a minigame in a Hidden Area which may be found using the infrared sensor on the Game Boy Color.[2]
- Two Charaboms, Heat Rock and Oct Kong, were only distributed through special events in Japan, and can no longer be obtained through legitimate means.[2]
Rare Charaboms
As mentioned, the final two Charaboms, Heat Rock and Oct Kong, are not obtainable through gameplay. They are known as rare Charaboms.? レアキャラボン rea kyarabon The only way to obtain these Charaboms legitimately was to take a copy of Bomberman MAX with a Game Boy Color and attend a special live event, at which a representative of Hudson Soft would manually send the Charaboms to the player's cartridge as a present.[2][3]
There are two known events at which this took place. One was at the Next Generation World Hobby Fair in January of 2000. During this event, only Oct Kong was given away - Heat Rock was not distributed. The next event was the Tokyo Game Show. The event was held at Makuhari Messe from Friday, March 31 to Sunday, April 2, 2000, the duration of the convention. A Hudson booth was set up in the kid's corner, which is where players were able to receive both rare Charaboms, Oct Kong and Heat Rock, as presents.[3]

Unused Sprites
Within the games, there exist animated sprites appearing to depict Thunder Kong and Thunder Shark, stored alongside the other animated Charabom sprites that are used for Charaboms that emerge from cages or those which appear in the By Chance Game. However, Thunder Kong and Thunder Shark are only obtainable by fusing two Charaboms. Thus, these sprites appear to be unused.
In the provided image, because the appropriate palette for the sprites is unknown, the palettes from the large portraits for the respective Charaboms were applied.
