Grand Prix (グランプリ, guranpuri) is a Battle Mode unique to Super Bomberman R, added in version 2.0 on November 15, 2017.[1] It is a team-based mode that can be played with 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, or 3 vs. 3 players. Characters' special abilities are combined with character-specific stats, including both limitation and starting power-ups. Unlike the traditional Battle Mode, characters respawn after being hit in this mode; the victory condition is instead selected from one of three rules.[2]

Story

The Big Bang Grand Prix is a Bomberman tournament held every 100 years. This year, it is being held on Planet Bomber. A week before the tournament begins, the Bomberman Brothers are interrupted during their training by Dracula Bomber, Pyramid Head Bomber, and Anubis Bomber, who have arrived to check out the competition. Though White regards the tournament as a friendly competition, Dracula Bomber views it as a death battle to determine who should rule the universe. Deeming his opponents unworthy, he prepares to destroy the siblings, but is interrupted by Vic Viper Bomber, Simon Belmont Bomber, and Jehuty Bomber. Looking forward to the competition, Vic Viper Bomber informs the Bomberman Brothers of their memory cartridge capability, rekindling his courage and fighting spirit. After witnessing White's newfound power, Dracula Bomber is impressed, and both sides prepare for the competition.

Selection

  • Multiplayer Grand Prix - A couch multiplayer option. Up to six controllers may be paired to a single console.
  • Local Grand Prix - Up to six nearby Nintendo Switch consoles may participate with one another wirelessly. Alternatively, three controllers may be paired to each team's console, allowing up to six players to compete. One player must create a room, generating a 4-digit room number for other consoles to enter using the "Find Room" option.
  • Online Grand Prix - Two controllers may be paired to a single console, connecting to the online network.
    • League Grand Prix - The player is connected to a room with five other players. See League Grand Prix below.
    • Free Grand Prix - The player may create or find a room via Room Number, as in the Local Grand Prix. A Quick Play option matches the player up with any random room that is waiting for other players. Finally, the Find Friends option will connect the player to any room created by one of their Switch friends that is currently awaiting other players.

In non-League Online Grand Prix, players may gain or lose BP and gems. In update 2.2 (9/19/2018), "BOMBER TIME" was added to both League Battle and League Grand Prix.[1] From 4PM to 9PM on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, the amount of gems and BP gained through League Grand Prix are doubled.[3]

After assigning players to teams, each team may select one of six emblems: Eagle, Knight, Chameleon, Dolphin, Ninja, or Rex.

Common Rules

The following rules are common to all Grand Prix settings:

  • Rounds begin at the count of three. Characters may move before the round begins, but cannot place bombs or use special abilities.
  • Each round has a time limit of three minutes.
  • If a character is eliminated, they will respawn at their origin point in five seconds.
  • If a character steps onto an item that they cannot use, the item will flip onto an adjacent square.
  • After each round, both teams switch starting points on the map.
  • The team who wins two out of three rounds is the victor.

Block Rain

Halfway through each round, more soft blocks will fall onto the stage. These blocks can eliminate characters they land upon.

Crystal

In this mode, a number of crystals are laid out on the stage. Each team competes to collect as many crystals as possible. The character who possesses the most crystals on each team is marked with a crown icon. A character who is eliminated will lose half of all their crystals and half of their team's points, rounded up. The crystals scatter around the map and may then be collected by other characters. Victory conditions are as follows:

  • When time is up, the team with the most crystals wins.
  • When time is up, if both teams are tied for crystals, the team with the least mistakes wins.
  • If a team collects all crystals on the map, and can hold onto them for 15 seconds, that team automatically wins with a "perfect" bonus of +20 points.

The upper-left portion of this stage is one square higher than the lower-right portion. In the middle is a 5x5 square pit that can only be accessed from the upper-left platform. It is an open area. This stage features a large, open area in the middle with no grid of hard blocks. This stage is identical in layout to the classic Bomberman battle stage, but with free spaces in the upper-left and lower-right corners for teams to spawn at.

Checkpoints

Introduced in version 2.1 on June 27, 2018,[1] this mode features three checkpoints on each stage. Each checkpoint is a 3x3 square space. When a character steps into a checkpoint, their occupation gauge begins to fill. Once the gauge has been completely filled, that character's team will have occupied the checkpoint, and it will change to the team's colour to reflect that. The gauge takes about ten seconds to fill, but all characters from that team leave before it has been filled, it will quickly drain. The team gains points equal to the number indicated divided by ten. For every ten seconds a checkpoint is occupied, the occupying team will gain an additional bonus of the same amount of points.

If a character from one team enters the other team's checkpoint, the occupying team not gain points for it until the occupation gauge has drained, and it will not be counted at the end of the round until this has happened, but if the challenging character is removed and their occupation gauge drains, the checkpoint will immediately revert to the occupying team's control. If characters from both teams are standing in the same checkpoint, the occupation gauge will halt all progress. At the end of the round, any occupied checkpoint will grant a point bonus to its occupying team equal to the number indicated. Victory conditions are as follows:

  • When time is up, the team with the most points wins.
  • When time is up, if both teams are tied for points, the team with the least mistakes wins.
  • If a team occupies all checkpoints on the map, and can hold onto them for 15 seconds, that team automatically wins with a "perfect" bonus of +20 points.

This is a wide stage with a large, open area in the middle surrounded by a pit. This is a fully-gridded stage divided by a pit and a moving floor. Two checkpoints are located on the west side of the stage. This stage is identical in layout to the classic Bomberman battle stage, but with free spaces in the upper-left and lower-right corners for teams to spawn at.

Basic Bomber

In this mode, teams compete to eliminate each other's characters. Each character begins each round with six lives. When all of a character's lives have been depleted, that character cannot respawn for the rest of the round. Victory conditions are as follows:

  • When time is up, the team with the most lives left wins.
  • If all of a team's lives have been depleted, the opposing team automatically wins with a "perfect" bonus of +5 points.

This stage is identical in layout to the classic Bomberman battle stage, but with free spaces in the upper-left and lower-right corners for teams to spawn at. Two Punches, two Power Gloves, and two Bomb Kicks are visible in preset locations at the beginning of the match.

Civilians

Introduced in version 2.2 on September 19, 2018,[1] this mode features two bases on each stage, one for each time. Each base is a 3x3 square space. At the beginning of a match, five Balloms (taking the form of blue and red Ballom-chans) are added to each base. When a character touches the Ballom in the middle of the opposing team's base, they will take a Ballom. The character will begin moving at minimum speed while the Ballom follows. If the character returns to their team's base with the Ballom, it will be added to their base, and they will gain a point. If they are eliminated, the Ballom will stand still, waiting for another character to touch it.

A number above each base indicates how many Balloms are in it. This number increases when a character brings a Ballom back to their own team's base and decreases when a character takes a Ballom from the opposing team's base. Victory conditions are as follows:

  • When time is up, the team with the most points wins.
  • When time is up, if both teams are tied for points, the team with the least mistakes wins.
  • If one team has control of all ten Balloms, and can hold onto them for 15 seconds, that team automatically wins with a "perfect" bonus of +5 points.
