The Five Dastardly Bombers as they appear in Super Bomberman 3.

The Five Dastardly Bombers (凶悪ボンバー5人衆, kyouaku bonbā go ninshū, literally "fiendish Bomber 5-man team"), localized in Super Bomberman 2 and Super Bomberman 3 as the Five Bad Bombers, are a recurring team of villain characters and the first team of villain Bombers in the Bomberman franchise.

Classic Bomberman

Super Bomberman 2

The Five Dastardly Bombers claim to be cyborgs created by aliens for the purpose of capturing the original Bomberman.[1] After invading Earth and kidnapping him aboard their ship, they head back into space. However, Bomberman breaks loose, and defeats each Dastardly Bomber, completely destroying the four stages connected to the middle of the ship. As the sole survivor, Plasma Bomber extends his hand to Bomberman, but is shot by the alien G. Ganzu. After this boss is defeated, the last remaining portion of the ship explodes as well, sending Bomberman hurtling back to Earth.

In all localizations of this game's instruction booklet as well as the official guidebook, the Five Dastardly Bombers are referred to as cyborgs (サイボーグ, saibōgu).[1][2] In the opening comic of the guidebook, Brain Bomber refers to them specifically as "Bomber Cyborgs" (ボンバーサイボーグ, bonbā saibōgu).[3] However, this term is never mentioned again in subsequent games.

Super Bomberman 3

Professor Buggler retrieves the lifeless Dastardly Bombers.

Appearing from outer space, Professor Buggler makes his way to Earth in his space ship to pick up the lifeless remains of the Five Dastardly Bombers, who have been resting amidst wreckage. Reviving them, he sends them out to five planets of Bomber Nebula, where they steal and scatter the Mother Computer Chips of each planet.[4] White and Black Bomber both respond to an emergency dispatch, infiltrating each planet, defeating each Dastardly Bomber, and restoring the chips. The Five Dastardly Bombers escape their encounters using a new comet-like form and appear for a final rematch aboard the Buggler Ship, where they are combined into the giant mech Gattaider. Once it is destroyed, the five are restored to their previous forms, but are left unconscious on the floor as the ship explodes.

Interim

The defeat of the Five Dastardly Bombers is referenced in Super Bomberman Panic Bomber W, in which Pretty Bomber, the only known survivor, tracks down Bomberman to exact her revenge.[5] She is unsuccessful. After this appearance, Pretty Bomber becomes a recurring character on her own.

In Super Bomberman 4, according to the official website, Buggler designs the Bomber Shittenou and Great Bomber to specifically improve upon the flaws of the Five Dastardly Bombers.[6]

The Five Dastardly Bombers make a non-canon cameo appearance in Bomberman B-Daman. The four male members act as stage obstacles and gimmicks. Pretty Bomber only appears as a background character in two of the levels' borders.

In Saturn Bomberman Fight!!, it is revealed that Golem Bomber also survived, but was left damaged and wandering in a forest. According to Honey, he already has a bounty on his head. This is the first game to explicitly state that Professor Buggler created the Five Dastardly Bombers.[7] However, a conversation between Combatant #12 and Golem Bomber suggests that the latter used to belong to the Hige Hige dan instead.

Bomberman Tournament

It is said that the Five Dastardly Bombers, led this time by Brain Bomber, attacked planet Phantarion at some point in the past; despite severely wounding MAX, he managed to drive them away. Later, they returned to enact a modified version of their previous assault, this time freezing the planet's troops and taking the floating palace, Fantasy. MAX was sent to investigate, but was captured by Plasma Bomber and brainwashed to do their bidding. Approximately one week later, Dr. Ein sends Bomberman to investigate.

Each Dastardly Bomber controls a different zone in the world from bases they have built there. In each base, they have hidden the Medallions required to access Fantasy, which they have corrupted. Within Fantasy, Brain Bomber and MAX are building the Ultimate Weapon. However, before it is complete, they are stopped by Bomberman. Though the Five Dastardly Bombers are defeated, each one is seen escaping in comet form.

Super Bomberman R

This game features a reimagining of the Five Dastardly Bombers. They are robotic life-forms who had been discarded and left for dead on Planet Scrapheap sometime in the past. Buggler arrives at the onset of the game's story, reviving them with his dark powers. Brainwashing them, he sends them to conquer the five planets of the Starry Sky Solar System. Each Dastardly Bomber has a different scheme that they have used to wreak havoc on the planets. They are defeated one-by-one by the Bomberman Brothers.

At the Black Hole, the unconscious Five Dastardly Bombers are summoned by Buggler, who fuses them together into Great Gattaida. Once the mech has been destroyed, the Dastardly Bombers regain their memories, undoing the brainwashing. They then help the Bomberman Brothers defeat Buggler.

During the credits, the Five Dastardly Bombers are seen returning to their former lives and interacting with the Bomberman Brothers.

Origin

As evidenced by the Japanese instruction booklet for Super Bomberman 2, each Dastardly Bomber was created through a contest by various children.[1] The specifics of this contest are currently unknown.
